BENEFITS BREAKDOWN
Personal Injury Protection is the $10,000 of coverage every Florida driver already pays for. Here is exactly what it pays — and what quietly reduces it. General information, not legal advice.
The coverage generally reimburses 80% of reasonable and medically necessary expenses: hospital, ambulance, physician, dental, chiropractic, surgical, X-ray, rehabilitative, and prescription costs tied to the crash.
If crash injuries keep you from working, benefits generally replace 60% of lost gross income and can reimburse replacement services — help you must now pay for, like childcare or lawn care.
The policy also includes a death benefit of $5,000 per person, paid in addition to any medical and disability benefits already used.
THE FINE PRINT
The headline limit is $10,000, but four things routinely cut what gets paid: the 14-day initial-treatment requirement; the $2,500 cap when no emergency medical condition (EMC) is determined; PIP deductibles up to $1,000 that some policies carry; and the 80%/60% co-payment structure itself — the benefit was never designed to pay 100% of anything. Massage and acupuncture are excluded by statute. See how the EMC rule works in the $2,500 limit explained.
FAQ
Coverage generally extends to the named insured, resident relatives, and in many cases passengers and pedestrians without their own PIP, depending on the policies involved.
No. It pays economic benefits only — medical costs, lost wages, replacement services, and the death benefit. Pain-and-suffering claims run through a liability claim against an at-fault party, subject to Florida's serious-injury threshold.
Generally no. Florida PIP applies to motor vehicles with four or more wheels; motorcyclists typically are not covered while riding.
Health insurance, MedPay coverage if you bought it, or a liability claim against an at-fault driver may cover the rest. If your benefits have been exhausted or denied, see what to do when a PIP claim is denied.
